CLABE

Eighteen-digit Mexican bank identifier with a check digit, used by the SPEI rail.

A CLABE encodes the institution, the location, the account number and a check digit across eighteen digits. As with an IBAN, the check digit is verified by calculation: a typo is caught before sending.

It is the identifier expected by SPEI, Mexico’s interbank transfer rail, which settles in minutes on business days. An ordinary, shorter bank account number is not enough: the full CLABE is required.
