Understanding payout rails
Push and pull, instant and batch, ceilings and cut-offs: how to read a payout method catalogue and pick the rail that fits your situation.

A payment rail is infrastructure that moves money between two accounts, with its own operating rules, hours, ceilings and identifier format. The rail you pick decides more than half your experience: the timing, the fixed cost, what you have to type, and the probability that the payment arrives first time.
This guide gives you the reading grid.
The fundamental distinction: push or pull
A push rail moves money from the sender to the beneficiary on the sender's instruction. SEPA transfer, PIX, Nigerian NIP, ACH credit: the sender triggers, the beneficiary does nothing.
A pull rail works the other way: the beneficiary asks, the payer authorises. SEPA direct debit, card payment, iDEAL, BLIK. Money does flow from payer to merchant, but the initiative belongs to the merchant.
A service that must pay you needs a push rail. That is why iDEAL, Bizum, BLIK, TWINT, Satispay, MB WAY and Zelle appear in no serious payout catalogue — not for lack of integration, but because the operation does not exist in their protocol or is forbidden by their rulebook. The five families of push rails
Instant transfer
SEPA Instant in the euro area, PIX in Brazil, NIP in Nigeria, Faster Payments in the UK, SPEI in Mexico, PayNow in Singapore, PromptPay in Thailand.
Common characteristics: settlement in seconds, operation 24/7, immediate irrevocability. They know neither cut-offs nor public holidays.
Their limit is the per-payment ceiling set by the receiving institution, often lower than the scheme's own.
Classic batch transfer
SEPA SCT in the euro area, ACH in the United States.
They run on clearing cycles, business days only. An order placed after the deadline joins the next batch. That mechanism is described in Why your SEPA transfer arrives tomorrow.
Their advantage: very low cost and high ceilings. Their drawback: the banking calendar.
Mobile money
M-Pesa in Kenya, MTN Mobile Money in Ghana, Orange Money and Wave in West Africa.
The account is not a bank account: it is an electronic money balance attached to a phone number. Consequences: tight ceilings set by local regulation, and an extra step if you want cash, with its own tariff at the agent.
Wallets
PayPal, Wise, Revolut.
These are accounts, not rails. You can be paid into them, and they reach countries where no local rail is available. But the credited balance stays with the provider: withdrawing it to a bank has its own timing and sometimes its own fee. An instant credit does not mean instant money in the bank.
International wire
SWIFT.
Two to five business days, fees taken by each intermediary bank, and an amount received sometimes lower than the amount sent without anyone having announced it. This is the rail of last resort, used when no local rail exists.
The six properties to read on a rail page
For each rail in our catalogue, six pieces of information decide whether it suits you.
- Currency. One rail equals one currency, except SWIFT. Receiving in a currency other than your account's triggers an extra conversion at your bank, at its rate.
- Countries covered. A local rail only serves residents holding a local account.
- Median timing and 95th percentile. The first is what you will usually experience; the second is what happens one time in twenty. Publishing only the median flatters the rail on exactly the day it disappoints you.
- Business days or continuous operation. That is the difference between "Friday evening" and "Monday morning".
- Minimum and maximum per payment. The minimum exists because below it fixed costs exceed the point. The maximum is a risk ceiling, not a technical limit: a larger amount is split.
- The fields required. IBAN, NUBAN, CLABE, PIX key, phone number: each format has its own validation, and that is where the failure rate is decided.
Those six values appear on every rail page, with the date of the last manual verification of the data.
Identifiers, by family
The identifier format says a lot about the rail.

What modern rails share is name resolution: before sending, the system asks the receiving institution who owns the account and compares that with your verified identity. It is the only real protection on an instant, irrevocable rail, and it turns a typo into an error message rather than a permanent transfer to a stranger.
What makes a payout fail
In decreasing frequency, across all rails:
- Beneficiary name different from the verified identity. The leading cause everywhere.
- Syntactically valid identifier but inactive or closed account. A check digit does not detect a closure.
- Receiving institution's ceiling exceeded. Common on electronic money accounts.
- Account not accepting business-originated transfers. Some neobank accounts refuse credits coming from a company.
- Temporary rail degradation. Rare, tracked on the service status page.
The property nobody discusses: availability
A rail is not permanently available, and that information is almost always missing from comparisons.
Three forms of unavailability exist, and they are not alike.
Planned maintenance windows. Several national rails suspend service for a few hours, often in the local night, for accounting rollover. Payments are not lost, they queue and go out at reopening. It is predictable and generally published by the scheme operator.
Partial degradation. The rail works, but one particular receiving institution stops responding. The transfer is accepted by the network and sits pending at the beneficiary's bank. This is the most disorienting case, because everything looks normal on both sides.
Provider outage. We do not reach a rail directly: we go through regulated payment providers. If one of them is unavailable, the rail is unavailable to us, even if the scheme is working perfectly.
We publish rail state on the service status page and we do not hide that third case. A service claiming total availability on rails it does not operate itself is describing infrastructure it does not control.
Practical consequence: if timing is critical to you, prefer a rail whose median and 95th percentile are close together. A rail with a three-minute median but a one-hour 95th percentile is excellent on average and disappointing one time in twenty.
Choosing your rail in three questions
Where do you live, and in which currency do you want to be paid? That question rules out most of the catalogue immediately. Receiving in your account's currency avoids a second conversion.
Does timing genuinely matter? If yes, an instant rail — even slightly more expensive in fixed fees — is almost always right. If not, a classic transfer costs less and carries larger amounts.
Is the amount within the rail's bounds? An amount under the minimum blocks, an amount over the maximum is split. Bounds are on each page and summarised on limits.
